The mission.

The European Commission launched a call for projects (ISF Security) to build resilience against religious extremism among youngster. Lapino Albino was invited as a Storytelling Expert by Beyond the Horizon to participate in a consortium that would bring together theologists from different universities around Europe and some digital experts to create ‘Educ8’.

Educ8 is an online platform with several modules for teachers to use in their religious lessons for students between 10-16 years of age.

The creative proposal

The project consists of 26 modules divided over 6 religions: Catholism, Judaism, Islam, Protestantism, Orthodox and Ethical.

Each module starts with a story to introduce a specific topic and how a particular religion deals with this topic.

This story would be shown in an animated video.

The topics are very broad: from ‘Climate change’ to ‘Encounters with other religions’.

To bring religion closer to modern society we proposed for each topic a creative approach. For over a year we worked with the different theologists from all over Europe to write the scripts for the 26 episodes.

We not only needed to make sure the religious content was correct but also that the videos would be ‘attractive’ for young viewers.

Storytelling

We proposed a South Park style of animation. (a bit risky towards Theologists) This style made it possible to go quickly into the topic without being completely realistic.

The characters are not realistic, they look more like stereotypes, but the situations they are in are very recognizable .

It doesn’t really matter if all characters or situations are realistic as long as the result would be a better understanding of the religious approach of the specific topic.

As storrytelling expert, we also tried to include a ‘fantastic element’ in each episode. This could be anything: a time traveling bus, a religious videogame, a secret hideout of a virtual entity that names itself ‘iChrist’, … anything was possible.

The complete series of 26 episodes was produced in-house at Lapino Albino in 3 different languages (all lip-synced) in the very short time of 18 months of production.
