The mission.
ZF Wind Power is a global player in gearboxes for wind turbines and produce innovative solutions for this sector. They keep searching for new and more efficient ways to produce energy with wind turbines.
Their gearboxes allow wind turbines to be put at almost any location where there is even the slightest gush of wind, the so called « low wind area’s ». ZF created a gearbox just for these kind of situations.
There is a very big potential in China for the use of these kind of wind turbines with ZF Wind Power gearboxes and they wanted a high performance communication tool to use in this market.
The creative proposal
It is always very difficult to show something that is invisible or something that is ‘lacking’. So to show in a video that there is ‘no’ or little wind is somewhat of a challenge.
Wind is invisible and to show something invisible and especially the lack of it, might be next to impossible.
We came up with an idea where a father and a son go wind kiting. Of course this doesn’t work, which shows the lack of wind. But then the father sees wind turbines turning and is a bit confused.

The beautiful engineering of the high performance gearboxes of ZF Wind Power is of course also put in the spotlight.
We used 3D models of the SHIFT gearboxes to show how they could work in a wind turbine.
The combination of the ‘little’ story of the father and son combined with technical images of the gearboxes make this video an ideal video to present ZF Wind Power’s solutions.
We also made sure the supporting actors were authentic Chinese people (we found them by contacting the Chinese embassy in Belgium) and the soundtrack and visuals were also made for this target audience.
